This fortified Porto is produced in the heart of the Douro Valley by the Royal Velha winery, Quinta das Carvalhas, founded in 1756. It is produced only in the best years. A variety of local grapes harvested from old vines are trod by foot, and the resulting juice is aged in oak vats for 4-6 years. The result is a wonderfully smooth, powerful Port wine with notes of black cherry, chocolate and oak with a long finish.
